Kodachrome
Well, no one in the photographic world can say it wasn’t a shock that Kodak pulled the plug on the most legendary film of all time, but a shockwave has travelled through all film users, past and present.
On the 22nd January, 2009, Kodak announced they would no longer be producing anymore of the world’s oldest film still in production, one that also happened to be the world’s first commercial colour film. Dwayne’s, the last place on Earth to still process this fantasic stuff, has given everyone until the end of 2010 to shoot their last rolls before they shut down their K-14 development forever.
In my time in the cybersphere, especially within Flickr, and especially in the last few months as I have begun to shoot film, I have been made aware of the legendary status of this incredibly iconic film. It is a rare thing, a film that inspires such awe and respect. Having seen some of the digitised images of the stuff, it is easy to see why.
The film is stunning. Super sharp, incredibly high resolution, so realistic and amazing contrast. I’d never seen anything like it. My Mum calls me a “purist” photographer, which is probably true, and over the last 3 years or so, I’ve been looking at ways of producing the most realistic images I can. Photoshop helps. But this stuff, is astonishing. No PP required, just SOOC images. I’ve been looking into buying some for a while now, and sitting here in this empty office (I’m on work experience and everyone has buggered off to court or whatever and left me bored) I’m about to shell out a little less than £9 for a roll of this great stuff.
Last night I analysed my financial situation, and its good. I need some dev. and fixer, and some more 35mm film. I’m getting 3 rolls of FP4 and Neopan ACROS respectively. I want to be prepared for the summer hols
I’ll be selling a little digi I dont want anymore too, so that’s £50 I can use for extra stuff.
I thought as I’m here, may as well catch up on my photographic situation: I made a Tumblr a few days ago, mostly as a link to Flickr and WordPress, also a kind of Twitter alias. I think Twitter is crap, but Tumblr has the little bits that Twitter lacks; posts and audio and video uploads (also unlike WordPress) Anyway, find it here.
Oh yeah, I’ve been invited to do a photoshoot for my friend and his mate. They are a jazz duo, and they wanted some good shots of them, and asked me (it’s common knowledge in my year about my and my cameras. Nobody else really takes photos like I do) and I said sure. On the same note, I’ve been assigned “party photographer” at my Grandma’s garden party in a few weeks. She got loads of money from a dead relative and is celebating (lol)
Back to doing nothing now, I guess.
